2 Dead, 2 Officers Wounded in Palm Bay Domestic Disturbance Shooting |
Tragic Incident Unfolds in Brevard County Neighborhood |
A domestic disturbance in Palm Bay, Florida, escalated into a deadly shootout on Sunday afternoon, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to two police officers.
At approximately 2:07 p.m., officers responded to a call at a residence on Forgal Avenue NE. Upon arrival, they encountered 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, who was reportedly armed and uncooperative. An exchange of gunfire ensued, during which two officers sustained injuries. Both officers were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive.
Kapas fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. During his attempt to evade capture, he fatally shot his grandfather, 78-year-old William Kapas. Responding officers subsequently engaged and killed the suspect to prevent further harm to the community.
Further investigation revealed that prior to the confrontation with police, Kapas had killed two individuals: 76-year-old retired priest Robert Hoeffner and his 69-year-old sister, Sally Hoeffner. Their bodies were discovered in a separate residence, and authorities are working to determine the connection between Kapas and the Hoeffners.
Palm Bay Police Chief Mariano Augello commended the officers' actions, stating they "did what they were trained to do: neutralize and stop a threat to our community." He emphasized that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Chief Augello extended gratitude to the community and various law enforcement agencies for their support during this challenging time.
This tragic event underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the devastating impact of domestic violence on communities. |
