Simultaneous Brush Fires in Palm Bay Lead to I-95 Closure and Residential Evacuations

On Sunday afternoon, two significant brush fires erupted simultaneously in Palm Bay, Florida, prompting the closure of Interstate 95 and the evacuation of nearby homes.

 

The first fire ignited west of I-95, producing dense smoke that severely reduced visibility. As a result, authorities closed the interstate in both directions between Malabar Road and St. Johns Heritage Parkway. Motorists were redirected to Babcock Street and US-1 as alternative routes. All lanes reopened just before 10:30 p.m.

 

Firefighters from Palm Bay Fire Rescue, Brevard County Fire Rescue, the Florida Forest Service, and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office collaborated to combat the blaze in the densely wooded area. Aerial support was provided by the STAR helicopter, which conducted water drops to suppress the flames.

 

Simultaneously, a separate 50-acre brush fire broke out in an area known as "The Compound," rapidly advancing toward residential streets near Madden and Garvey Avenue. Palm Bay Police closed local roads to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles. A strike team from northern Brevard County joined the efforts to contain the fire. Although several homes were threatened, swift action by firefighters ensured their protection.

 

Both the STAR and Florida Forest Service helicopters performed aerial water drops to assist ground crews. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.

 

These fires occurred amid dry conditions in the region. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to local burn bans to prevent future incidents.

 

In response to the increased fire activity, Brevard County officials have implemented a burn ban, prohibiting open burning and the use of fireworks.
