Brevard County will launch its annual Point in Time Count (PITC) on January 22 to closely examine the state of homelessness in the area.

Led by the Brevard Homeless Coalition, the one-night survey gathers critical data on both sheltered and unsheltered residents experiencing homelessness.

Recent PITC findings reveal a concerning surge in unsheltered individuals, emphasizing a growing need for enhanced housing solutions and expanded support services.

Community members are encouraged to take part as volunteers, with roles ranging from conducting surveys to assembling essential item bags and making donations.

A virtual training for volunteers begins at 5:30 p.m., offering instruction on survey tools, outreach practices, and event expectations.

Participation helps shape future strategies and brings Brevard closer to addressing homelessness effectively.

Every volunteer’s effort drives real impact in supporting local neighbors in need.

A man in his 60s drowned while kayaking in Turkey Creek, Palm Bay, on Thursday afternoon, January 22.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue, police, and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office responded, discovering the man’s body nearly 15 feet underwater after his kayak capsized during an outing with friends.

Authorities are unsure if he wore a life vest at the time.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is now investigating the tragedy.

This loss has deepened concerns locally, especially since a major sewage spill in June 2025 released over three million gallons of wastewater into Turkey Creek, causing persistent water quality issues and affecting wildlife.

Despite city-led restoration, some residents remain worried about safety.

Officials are urging all kayakers and boaters to use caution and proper gear while on the water.

  • Haridopolos Secures Federal Funding for Key Space Coast Projects
  • Credit Scores: Make Credit Make Sense

U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos has secured federal funding for key projects across Florida’s Space Coast, targeting environmental upgrades, educational opportunities, and public safety improvements.

Nearly $14 million will be invested in enhancing the Indian River Lagoon, aiming to cut pollution, restore water flow, and protect local wildlife such as dolphins and manatees.

In education, over $2 million will launch an Aviation Assembly and Fabrication program at Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School, preparing students for careers in the expanding aerospace sector.

For safety, $500,000 is allocated to upgrade the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office search-and-rescue helicopter, boosting readiness for emergencies and search missions.

These initiatives are part of a larger investment in science and innovation, with NASA receiving $24.4 billion, further cementing the Space Coast’s vital role in American space exploration.

Local residents can expect meaningful improvements across environmental, educational, and safety domains thanks to these targeted federal allocations.

Your credit score plays a vital role in shaping your financial future, influencing everything from loan approvals to apartment rentals.

Understanding and improving your credit score is key to financial health.

A credit score, usually between 300 and 850, shows lenders how risky it would be to offer you credit.

Higher scores mean better chances for favorable loan terms.

Key factors include payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, mix of credit accounts, and the number of recent credit applications.

To build a stronger score, always pay bills on time, keep balances low—under 30% of your limit—and be cautious about seeking new credit.

Regularly monitoring your credit report for mistakes is also important.

March is National Credit Education Month, with local and national organizations offering workshops to help you take control of your financial wellbeing.

Using these resources can empower you to boost your credit and secure a more stable financial future.

Outdoor & Survival

Embark on thrilling adventures with our Outdoor & Survival essentials 🌲🧭, designed to equip you for nature's wildest challenges and ensure you thrive in the great outdoors!

🌿 Outdoor & Living Survival

Understanding the Importance of Water Conservation in Florida

Life outdoors in Florida can be beautiful—but survival also means protecting the resources that keep it thriving.

With long dry seasons, increased population growth, fragile natural springs, and heavy outdoor activity, conserving water becomes essential not just for nature, but for everyday living and outdoor preparedness.

Whether you're gardening, camping, or exploring the backcountry, understanding water conservation keeps you safer, more sustainable, and more ready for Florida’s unpredictable climate.

  • Heat & Hydration Awareness: Florida’s year-round heat increases water consumption.

Conserving at home ensures more water security during outdoor excursions.
  • Protecting Natural Ecosystems: Natural springs feed Florida’s springs and rivers—overuse can deplete them and impact outdoor landscapes.
  • Gardening Smart: Use early-morning watering, mulch, and drought-tolerant plants to reduce waste while still keeping your outdoor spaces resilient.
  • Rain Harvesting Advantage: Collecting rainwater in barrels gives you a backup source for plants, outdoor cleaning, and emergency use.
  • Leak Prevention: Small drips can waste gallons every week.

Fix hoses, sprinklers, and household leaks to protect your long-term supply.
  • Outdoor Gear Prep: Bring reusable water containers and purification tools when camping to lessen dependence on bottled reserves.
  • Flood–Drought Cycle: Florida faces sudden flooding yet also droughts.

Storing and conserving helps you adapt to both extremes.
  • Efficient Tools: Choose low-flow sprinklers or drip irrigation for controlled, smarter water use outdoors.
  • Community Conservation: Local efforts protect shared outdoor areas, campgrounds, and waterways from drying out.
  • Emergency Water Planning: Conservation habits make it easier to build proper water storage for hurricanes or long isolation outdoors.

Tip: Treat water like a survival tool.

Rotate stored water every few months, use natural rainfall when possible, and always pack responsibly for outdoor trips.

⚠️ Safety: During extreme conditions, always carry a method for water purification such as portable filters, purification tablets, or boiling.

If local water supply is limited, ration wisely—prioritize drinking over outdoor tasks.

Avoid using contaminated floodwater for hydration without proper treatment, even in an emergency.

Stay alert for drought advisories and follow local conservation updates when using outdoor water systems.

💧 Water saved today keeps Florida wild tomorrow—stay smart, conserve well, and survive sustainably.
