📰 Palm Bay – News Highlights

Tuesday, October 28, 2025

🌤 Weather & Natural Events

A slow-moving storm system drenched the Palm Bay area and surrounding Brevard County overnight, delivering over 15 inches of rain in some neighborhoods within 24 hours.

Emergency crews, along with volunteers using boats and ATVs, responded to multiple rescue calls as streets and low-lying zones became impassable.

A flood watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening, and officials urge residents to avoid flooded roads and remain alert for updates.

Strong surf and rip-current advisories also continue along Brevard’s coastline.

🚨 Crime & Public Safety

The Palm Bay Police Department is investigating the suspicious deaths of a couple found inside their apartment earlier this month.

While the case remains under investigation, authorities emphasized there is no immediate threat to the community.

Separately, a 15-year-old student from Palm Bay was arrested for allegedly making a written threat of a mass shooting toward a local middle school in West Melbourne.

Police confirmed that no weapons were found and that the suspect remains in juvenile custody pending further investigation.

🎪 Community & Events / Infrastructure

The Palm Bay City Council remains in the spotlight following its 3–2 vote to censure Councilman Chandler Langevin over social media comments criticized as discriminatory.

Langevin has since filed a lawsuit claiming the censure violated his First Amendment rights.

The issue continues to draw significant public debate during city meetings.

Meanwhile, city engineers are conducting new studies for the proposed St.

John’s Heritage Parkway widening
project to help reduce congestion and improve evacuation efficiency during storms.

Construction timelines are expected to be finalized later this year.

Green Living Tip✔️

💧 Water Conservation in the Garden: Adjusting Irrigation for Cooler Weather and Less Evaporation

Keep your garden thriving while conserving water through smart irrigation practices suited for Florida’s seasonal changes.

As temperatures cool, plants require less frequent watering.

By adjusting your irrigation schedule and improving your garden’s efficiency, you can reduce evaporation, save money, and help preserve Florida’s precious water resources — all while maintaining a healthy, vibrant landscape.

🕓 Adjust Watering Schedules

  • Reduce irrigation frequency during cooler months — once or twice a week may be enough.
  • Water early in the morning to minimize evaporation losses.
  • Use a smart irrigation controller that adapts to weather conditions automatically.

🌿 Choose the Right Plants

  • Plant native and drought-tolerant species that need less water year-round.
  • Group plants with similar water needs together to prevent overwatering.
  • Replace high-water lawns with groundcovers or ornamental grasses.

🌸 Improve Soil and Mulching

  • Add compost to improve soil’s water-holding capacity and root health.
  • Use mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce evaporation.
  • Keep mulch 2–3 inches deep and away from direct contact with plant stems.

🚿 Maintain Your Irrigation System

  • Check for leaks, clogs, or misaligned sprinkler heads regularly.
  • Adjust sprinklers to avoid watering driveways, sidewalks, or streets.
  • Flush drip irrigation lines to ensure even water distribution.

🌎 Extra tip: Even in Florida’s mild winters, efficient watering can make a big difference.

Monitor soil moisture, let nature’s rainfall do the work when possible, and remember — a well-watered garden isn’t about frequency, but balance.

💚
