The Grant-Valkaria Community Association (GVCA) is nearing completion of Veterans Memorial Park, a moving tribute dedicated to U.S. Armed Forces members.

Set beside Grant-Valkaria Town Hall at 1449 Valkaria Road, the 4,900-square-foot park will showcase bronze statues of male and female soldiers, a military dog, a bald eagle, and a battlefield cross—each honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

An educational kiosk will help visitors explore military history through information on every branch, including the Space Force, with QR codes enabling deeper engagement.

The GVCA is inviting residents to purchase engraved bricks—displayed on vertical monuments—with personalized names and service details, further celebrating veterans’ legacies.

Thanks to widespread community support, the project’s cost has fallen to $210,000, with a Memorial Day weekend ribbon-cutting in sight.

Two major brush fires erupted in Palm Bay on Sunday afternoon, forcing the closure of Interstate 95 and triggering evacuations. All lanes were closed for hours between Malabar Road and St. Johns Heritage Parkway as thick smoke from a fire west of the interstate created hazardous driving conditions. Motorists were rerouted until the road reopened just before 10:30 p.m.

Simultaneously, a separate 50-acre blaze in "The Compound" threatened homes near Madden and Garvey Avenue. Palm Bay Police shuttered nearby streets for emergency response access while a Brevard County strike team joined the coordinated firefighting effort. Quick action protected all threatened homes, with helicopter water drops bolstering ground crews.

No injuries were reported, but dry weather and fire risk prompted Brevard County to issue a burn ban and urge residents to clear dry vegetation. The blazes have also sparked concerns about real estate and insurance rates in the affected neighborhoods, making continued vigilance essential.

  • Palm Bay's Winn-Dixie to Close, Reopen as ALDI in February
  • The Most Wholesome Afternoon You'll Have All Week: Why a Visit to This Brevard County U-Pick Farm Feels Like a Reset Button

Winn-Dixie on Malabar Road SW in Palm Bay will close in February, clearing the way for a new ALDI grocery store at the same location.

Employees have received advance notice, with opportunities to apply at ALDI or transfer to other area Winn-Dixie stores.

This shift follows ALDI’s sweeping acquisition of over 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations in 2024, part of a plan to convert 220 stores to its own model by 2027.

Southeastern Grocers, now rebranded as The Winn-Dixie Company, is refining its regional focus in Florida and southern Georgia.

Palm Bay residents can soon expect ALDI’s signature approach to affordable, streamlined grocery shopping.

For some locals, this signals an end to an era, while others look forward to expanded retail choices and possible economic boost.
